If you see a fork in the road, stick a fork in it.

16 December 2008

Yogi Berra was quoted saying ‘If you see a fork in the road, take it’. As with most of Yogi’s quotes. At first them seem illogical, but on reflection many are insightful.

As the pattern recognition experts we humans are, we often blind ourselves to alternatives. We see the familiar and we react in a familiar way, or take the same fork every time. This kind of reaction occurs in every aspect of our lives. Even those of us who pride ourselves on being innovative and fresh, will fall into the same paths.

Therefore, if we ever recognize a new fork, we should stick a fork in it. Sticking the fork in it is a metaphor for taking a really close look at it.
